TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona men's and women's cross country teams are set to compete in the ASU Cross Country Invitational on Friday, Oct. 23 starting at 4:20 p.m. at Papago Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. The women will be running in the three-mile race while the men will be running in the four-mile race.
“It's a similar race to the meet we hosted a few weeks ago,” head cross country coach James Li said. “We are not running our top runners, but it is a nice cross country meet and they are in a new location. We're looking forward to it because it might be the last opportunity for some of our athletes to run cross country this fall. It's a good opportunity for everyone else to get an opportunity to race.”
The women will be represented by Taryn Estavillo, Kayla Ferron, McKenna Gaffney, Margie Moyer, Tiffany Riley and Kirsten Vergara. Matthew Beer, Jeff Gautreau, Alex Hart, Patrick Leary, Jonas Legernes, Daniom Tecle and Brendan Tinoco will be running for the men. The Wildcats will join Arizona State, Northern Arizona, Bacone College and Dine College at the meet.
Last year at the ASU Cross Country Invitational, the women's team took first and the men took second. Former Wildcat Clea Formaz won the women's race and current Wildcat Bailey Roth took third in the men's race. Ferron took second place last year and Beer took sixth.
Last week, the women took third place and the men took 16th in the NCAA Pre-Nationals Unseeded Race in Louisville, Ky. Claire Green was Arizona's top finisher for the women as she took fourth place and Collins Kibet was the men's top finisher as he finished in fifth place.
Complete results will be posted on arizonawildcats.com once the meet has concluded.
