Baseball Announces Addition of Morimoto to Recruiting Class

Tucson, Ariz. – University of Arizona baseball coach Jay Johnson announced Monday that the program has added Mesa Community College product Mitchell Morimoto to its 2016 recruiting class.

Morimoto, who will come to Arizona as a utility player, is having a standout season for Mesa this season as a sophomore. The Issaquah, Washington product is hitting .442 with 12 doubles, 11 triples, five home runs, 20 stolen bases and 60 RBI in 54 games. He has an on-base percentage of .517 and is slugging .688 on the season.

As a freshman in 2015, Morimoto hit .393 with 21 doubles, seven triples, four home runs, 12 stolen bases and 45 RBI. He has a career fielding percentage of .969 at Mesa. He was named a NJCAA Division II Second-Team All-American after his freshman season.

“Mitchell is an incredibly athletic player who has had a terrific two-year career at Mesa Junior College,” Johnson said. “He is an accomplished hitter and will help us immediately in 2017. We could not be more excited to have him. He will fit in perfectly for us on offense and defense here at Arizona.”

This year, Morimoto leads the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference in batting average (.442), hits (88), total bases (137), and triples (11). In conference games only, he's first in runs (46), hits (65), total bases (97) and on-base percentage (.537).

At Issaquah High School, Morimoto was a two-time all-state selection and also first-team All-King County. As a senior, he hit .362 with five home runs and 23 runs driven in.

Morimoto, who has two years of eligibility remaining, will join Arizona's 16-man recruiting class for the 2017 class. Johnson announced 12 signees in the fall and three more – all junior college pitchers – last month.

The Wildcats are currently 28-16 on the season and ranked No. 19 in the Collegiate Baseball Top 25. The Cats will open a six-game homestand Friday night versus Oregon State. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
