Game 11 Southern Utah vs. Arizona
TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona continued some torrid hitting and used good pitching
from Jenny Gladding to beat Southern Utah, 8-0, and go to 4-0 in the
Wildcat Invitational.
Southern Utah dropped to 5-8 overall and 1-2 in the tournament. Arizona is
19-0 overall.
Toni Mascarenas' 10th home run of the season, broke a scoreless tie when
she led off in the bottom of the fourth. Mackenzie Vandergeest doubled to
left-center and scored on Jennie Finch's single to make it 2-0. An out
later, Allison Andrade hit her fourth homer of the year to make it 4-0.
Then, for the third time on the day, the Cats hit-back-to-back home runs,
this time pitcher Jenny Gladding's third of the year to make it 5-0.
Mascarenas hit another leadoff home run in the next inning, then
Vandergeest hit an inside-the-park shot which bounced off the centerfield
wall and back nearly to second base, allowing her to break up the throw to
the plate. After Finch singled, Kim Balkan doubled her in to end the game
on the eight-run mercy rule.
Gladding struck out 10 and allowed only three hits to improve to 6-0. SUU
Mandy Flint took the loss and dropped to 3-4.
Game 10 Arizona vs. McNeese State
TUCSON, Ariz. Unbeaten and No. 2-ranked Arizona put on a home run display
against McNeese State in the Cats' own Wildcat Invitational tournament
Saturday afternoon, pounding the Cowgirls, 13-1.
Arizona (18-0) jumped quickly to a 2-0 lead in the first with Lauren Bauer
and Nicole Giordano reaching with singles. Toni Mascarenas' single to
center scored Bauer and when the ball was bobbled, Giordano scored from first.
Just as quickly, the Cats led off the second with a walk by Allison
Andrade, an infield single by Erika Hanson and a single down the line by
Bauer to drive in Andrade. But that only started the rally as UA scored
seven more times on a two-run single by Leneah Manuma, a three-run home run
by Lindsey Collins and a solo homer by Jennie Finch.
McNeese pitcher Ashleigh Ivey turned the tables and hit the first pitch in
the MSU second, the first run scored off Finch in six games this year.
Manuma, Finch and Mackenzie Vendergeest hit solo home runs in the fourth
to extend Arizona's lead to 13-1. McNeese avoided a bigger inning with a
nifty double play after reliever Corrie Hale walked the bases loaded. Jaime
Manuel went deep into foul territory to catch a foul fly and throw out
Andrade at the plate.
Finch struck out 11 in four innings and improved her record to 6-0. Ivey
was the loser and dropped to 2-6 for McNeese State (5-6). Teresa Demeter
pitched the fifth inning to finish for UA.
Game 9 McNeese State vs. Drake
TUCSON, Ariz. The McNeese State Cowgirls won their first Wildcat
Invitational tournament game of the weekend with a 3-0 shutout victory over
Drake.
MSU pitcher Corrie Hale allowed eight hits but struck out three and
weathered three situations in which Drake had runners in scoring position.
McNeese State scored twice in the top of the first on four hits, the key a
two-run single by Tanya Prudhome, then pushed the lead to 3-0 in the fourth
with a run-scoring double by Stephanie Denham.
Drake dropped to 1-3 in the tournament and 2-7 overall. McNeese State
improved to 1-2 in the tournament and 6-6 overall.
Game 8 Drake vs. Connecticut
TUCSON, Ariz. Drake pitcher Katie Shimon scattered three hits to help the
Bulldogs win their first game in three tries at Arizona's Wildcat
Invitational, beating Connecticut, 5-2.
The Bulldogs scored two insurance runs in the top of the seventh on a
run-scoring double by Kristin Moeller and an RBI double by Shimon.
Drake (2-6) scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a fileder's
choice rbi by JamieWaterman. Connecticut (1-3) took the lead in the bottom
of the inning bring across a run on a Drake error and a single by Megan
Biddle.
Drake took a 3-2 lead with a run-scoring double by Brook Buchanan and a
single by Melanie Thevenote to drive in Buchanan.
Game 7 Connecticut vs. Florida
TUCSON, Ariz. Florida stayed unbeaten in Arizona's Wildcat Invitational
tournament by beating Connecticut, 6-3, Saturday morning.
The Gators took a 3-0 lead in the second inning with a run-scoring single
by Jennifer Mossadeghi and a two-run single by Jeniliee Garner. The Huskies
generated a run in the fourth with a leadoff double by Abbie Link, a single
by Megan Biddle and a sacrifice fly by Lisa Giralamo.
Florida (12-3) stretched the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the inning when
Ashley Boone doubled in Mossadeghi, who had singled and moved to second
when the centerfielder bobbled the ball. The Gators added another run with
a run-scoring grounder by Boone and a fielder's choice RBI by Mylin Piertro
in the sixth.
Connecticut rallied with two runs in the top of the seventh, keyed by a
two-run single by Link.
Florida collected nine hits, with Mossadeghi leading the way with three,
plus a career-high three runs scored. Connecticut dropped to 1-2 in the
tournament and overall.
