McGrath, UA Women Take Third at George Kyte

 TUCSON -  The University of Arizona Wildcat No. 14 women's and men's cross country teams kicked off the 2012 season at the George Kyte Classic in Flagstaff, Ariz. on Saturday. The competition was held at Buffalo Park. The UA women's squad earned a third-place finish with 66 points and the men's team finished in fourth place, totaling 108 points.

"Everybody did really well, head coach James Li said. "We did not run a lot of our top athletes but everybody that did run did a good job. I'm really happy with how the team performed, everything went really well."

Junior Melanie McGrath was the top finisher for the UA women. She took third place in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 17:06.0. She led a 3-10-15-17-21 finish for the Wildcats.

Sophomore Stephanie Bulder earned an 11th-place finish overall, 10th amongst collegians with a time of 17:48.5. Junior Erin Menefee came in 16th place overall, 15th among collegiate competitors, clocking a time of 18:14.6. Junior Hannah Moen's time of 18:28.8 was good for 18th place overall, 17th among scoring competitors. Freshman Molly Callahan rounded out the UA scoring five, finishing in 23rd overall, 21st among scorers with a time of 18:45.8.

Also competing for the UA women were sophomores Katie Penney (26th; 18:56.9) and Hanna Peterson (28th; 19:02.5).

For the women, Southern Utah University finished in first with 24 points. Arizona State University took second place, totaling 43 points.

"I think our women's team ran very well," Li said. "Melanie McGrath and Stephanie Bulder ran very well. We feel pretty good with where we are right now."

On the men's side, freshman Nathan Kandie was the top finisher for the Wildcats, taking ninth place in the 8,000-meter race with a time of 25:50.8. He led a 9-19-25-26-29 finish for Arizona.

Freshman Christopher Tansey finished in 25th place overall but 19th among scoring competitors with a time of 27:04.2. Senior Rory McLeod took 35th overall, 25th among scorers, clocking a time of 27:55.8. Freshman Michael Parkes finished 36th overall, 26th amongst collegiate scoring competitors with a time of 27:59.0. Junior Braden Timpe rounded out the scoring five for UA, coming in 40th place overall, 29th among scorers with a time of 28:38.3. Sophomore Thomas Valente's time of 28:47.4 was good for 41st place.

Northern Arizona University took first place in the men's team competition with 20 points. Southern Utah University took second with 54 points. Arizona State University finished in third with 66 points.

"Nathan Kandie is making great progress and doing much better," Li said. "Christopher Tansey ran very well today, too. The men's side overall is so much faster and that really bodes well for us over the coming weeks and the remainder of the season."

The Wildcats will return to action on September 14th to host the Dave Murray Invitational.
