TUCSON, Ariz. ?- Junior shortstop Jason Donald was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies with their third-round pick in the 2006 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. The selection is a 17-round improvement over his 20th-round selection by the Anaheim Angels coming out of Buchanan High School in Fresno, Calif., in 2003.
Donald, a three-year starter at shortstop for the Wildcats, recently wrapped up his junior season at UA with a career-high .332 batting average, while leading the team with 49 RBI and 19 doubles. He ended the 2006 season with a 26-game hitting streak, in which he batted .368 (43 for 117) with 10 doubles, a triple, four home runs, 25 RBI and 22 runs scored.
A career .315 hitter at Arizona, Donald has made 177 starts, and missed only two games out of a possible 179 during his time in Tucson. He helped guide the Wildcats to a 2004 College World Series appearance in Omaha, Neb., and a spot in the 2005 NCAA Fullerton Regional.
