TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona women’s soccer team fell to No.2 Stanford 4-1 Thursday night at Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium.
At tonight’s match, fans were asked to wear pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month. An 2012 season attendance record of 1,021 fans attended the match to honor survivors and loved ones who have lost the battle to breast cancer.
Arizona (5-7-3) scored its only goal of the night in the 74th minute of action, courtesy of sophomore forward Candice Osei-Agyemang. Osei-Agyemang was one on one with Stanford goalkeeper, Aly Gleason, and placed the ball in the upper left corner of the net to score her second goal of the season. Junior Jazmin Ponce led the Wildcats in shot attempts with five and teammate Ana-Maria Montoya behind her with two.
Stanford (12-1-1) outshot the Wildcats 16-12 with four separate Stanford players registering a goal. In the 67th minute, Alina Garciamendez registered her fifth goal of the season with a header off a corner kick from teammate Lo’eau LaBonta to put the Cardinal up 4-0. Junior Courtney Verloo led Stanford in shot attempts with four.
“We’re always going to have tough teams in our conference,” head Coach Lisa Oyen said. “We have to put a 90 minute effort into every game and I don’t think we did that today. There were some nerves playing against a team with Stanford on their jersey and being ranked nationally. We have played very good teams these last few weeks so now we’re just focusing on the last five.”
In the net, Arizona goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman recorded six saves. In 67 minutes of play, Stanford goalkeeper Emily Oliver registered two saves while back-up goalkeeper, Aly Gleason, registered two saves in 23 minutes of action.
The Wildcats head to Oregon to take on the University of Oregon and Oregon State. Arizona matches up with Oregon on Friday, Oct. 19 at 7:00 p.m. at Pape’ Field in Eugene, OR. On Sunday, Oct. 21 the Wildcats travel to Corvallis, Ore. to take on the Oregon State Beavers at Paul Lorenz Field at Patrick Wayne Valley Stadium at 12:00 p.m.
