In her final game at Arizona, senior Davellyn Whyte (Phoenix, Ariz.) led Arizona women’s basketball (12-18, 4-15) with 23 points, eight rebounds and six assists, but the No. 11 Wildcats fell to No. 6 Utah (18-12, 9-10), 66-48 in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament in Seattle, Wash. on Thursday.
Whyte finished her epic career at UA with 2,059 points and 4,244 minutes in 126 games.
Junior Erica Barnes (Sacramento, Calif.) added nine points and eight rebounds for the Wildcats.
As a team, Arizona outrebounded Utah, 36-28.
“Obviously, this is a tough loss,” Arizona Head Coach Niya Butts said. “This was the third time playing Utah this year and they were able to get the best of us. We just didn’t have enough punch to get it done.”
Utah shot lights out in the first half, connecting on 11-of-13 three-pointers for a blistering 85 percent, but Whyte’s 17 points, five assists and four rebounds kept the Wildcats in the game and trailed, 29-43 at halftime.
The Utes cooled off in the second half and Arizona narrowed the score to within 10 points after executing a 7-0 run, but the Wildcats could not close the gap all the way and Utah took the game, 66-48.
Michelle Plouffe led the Utes with 24 points and nine rebounds.
“We have a couple of seniors that are going to be moving on,” Butts said. “We wish them well, but outside of that, we just have to go back to the drawing board.”
