FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.- The University of Arizona women’s soccer team earned its first win of the 2012 season with a 3-0 shut out against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks on Sunday at Max Spilsbury Field at Lumberjack Stadium in Flagstaff, Ariz.
The Wildcats (1-2) came out strong registering their first goal in the eighth minute. Senior Susana Melendez picked up her first goal of the season with a header off a throw in by freshman Sheridan Cohen, which proved to be the game-winner.
Arizona out-shot the Lumberjacks (0-3), 12-5, with junior Jazmin Ponce leading the way with four shot attempts and senior Susana Melendez right behind her with three shot attempts. Fellow teammates Ana-Maria Montoya and Ariel Boulicault both registered two shots on goal.
Olympian Montoya recorded her first goal of the season in the 42nd minute to give the Wildcats a 2-0 advantage. Six minutes later she recorded her second goal on a free kick from midfield.
In the net, keeper Gabby Kaufman had five saves in her first shutout of the season. For the Lumberjacks, keeper Natalie Gilbertson recorded six saves on the day.
The Arizona at Northern Arizona match will be taped delayed and played on FOX Sports Arizona on Tuesday, August 28 at 2 p.m. and again aired on Wednesday August 29 at 5:30 p.m.
Up next, the Wildcats will travel to Omaha, Neb., to take on the Creighton University Bluejays on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 5 p.m. (CT) at Morrison Stadium.
