TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona women's soccer team picked up its third win of the season against the University of Houston in a 2-1 victory at the Sun Devil Desert Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
The Wildcats (3-3) came out very aggressive on offense registering a total of 20 shots with 14 on goal. Freshman Hannah Wong led the team with four total shots on goal while both Julia Glanz and Jazmin Ponce each registered two shots on goal.
"We started off slow," head coach Lisa Oyen said. "We were able to regroup and play how we wanted to in the second half. I give credit to our players to get our goal; they did a great job in creating opportunities. They are committed as a group to get to the level of play we want to be at."
Houston (3-4) registered its first goal in the 27th minute after Kylie Cook passed it to Jasmine Martinez. Arizona then answered in the 55th minute when Brie DeFelice scored after a deflected shot off of the Houston goalkeeper. With 24 minutes left in the game, Alex Smith scored the game winner for Arizona off of a penalty kick.
In the net, Arizona goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman recorded three saves throughout the game while Houston goalkeeper, Cami Koski, registered 12 saves.
The Wildcats are set to host the Arizona Cats Classic at Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium in Tucson, Ariz. Arizona will take on Florida International on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. and then play Loyola Marymount on Sunday, Sept. 16 at 7:00 p.m.
