TUCSON - The University of Arizona Wildcat men's and No. 5 women's track and field teams began competition at the Pac-12 Championships combined events this weekend in Los Angeles, Calif. On Saturday, at USC’s Cromwell Field and Katherine B. Loker Stadium, junior Amber Passalaqua sits in eighth place after four events. Junior Keegan Cooke is in a tie for sixth place after five events while junior Steven Scarvelis is in 11th place.

Cooke began the day in the 100-meter dash with a personal-best time of 11.36. His previous best was 11.55. Cooke finished in 10th place overall out of 13 decathletes. His mark added 782 points to his score. In the long jump, Cooke posted a mark of 21-8.75 (6.62m), good for seventh place and 725 points. Cooke threw 40-2.75 (12.26m) in the shot put, tacking on 622 points to his score. In the high jump, he had a clearance of 6-3.25 (1.91m) and added 723 points to his total. He closed the day with a personal best in the 400-meter run, clocking a time of 49.71 and adding 828 points. His previous best was 50.21. Cooke sits in a tie for sixth place after five events with 3,680 points.

Scarvelis opened up with a personal-best time of 11.43 in the 100-meter sprint. He improved on his previous best by .09. Scarvelis earned an 11th-place finish and added 767 points to his score. Scarvelis posted a mark of 19-9.5 (6.03m) in the long jump, good for 593 points and 12th place. In the shot put, he threw 42-11.5 (13.09m) and took third place overall. He cleared 5-11.5 (1.82m) in the high jump, a personal-best mark that added 644 points to his score. In the final event of the day, Scarvelis posted a personal-best time of 50.16 in the 400-meter run. He improved from his previous best of 50.32. That time was good for sixth place in the event and 807 points. He finished day one with 3,484 points and currently sits in 11th place. Jeremy Taiwo (Washington) leads the competition with 4,200 points.

Passalaqua clocked a time of 14.97 in the 100-meter hurdles to start Saturday’s competition. That mark was good for eighth place and 846 points. She tied for third place among the ten heptathletes in the high jump competition, clearing 5-5.25 (1.66m). That mark was good for 806 points. Passalaqua had a toss of 36-4.75 (11.09m), which ties a personal best. That was good for 601 points. She concluded day one with a time of 26.51 in the 200-meter sprint, adding 753 points to her total. She sits in eighth place heading into the final three events on Sunday with 3,006 points. Keia Pinnick (Arizona State) leads the competition with 3,441 points.

Competition for the decathlon begins at 11 a.m. PDT on Sunday while the heptathlon is set to start at 12 p.m.
