TUCSON, Ariz. -
Arizona women’s tennis player Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) was one of 64 players selected to compete in the 2013 NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Championships on Wednesday.
The competition will be held May 22-27 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex/Atkins Tennis Center in Urbana, Ill., following the conclusion of the team championship.
Of the 64 selected, 16 qualified automatically after winning a conference championship. Smyth was one of 48 players who received an at-large bid from the selection committee for the second-straight year.
In 2012, Smyth defeated the country’s 10th-ranked player before falling in the second round.
“We're excited that Lacey made the individual tournament,” Arizona Head Coach Vicky Maes said. “She had some great wins this year, despite being out for a long time in the fall with injury. She worked hard to regain her strength and get back to her competitive level. She played great at NCAAs last year and the experience will benefit her now that she gets to go back.”
Smyth played at the No. 1 singles spot in every match for the Wildcats this season, facing some of the nation’s top talent. She posted an impressive 16-8 record, including wins over four top-80 ranked players. She earned Pac-12 Player of the Week honors on two different occasions.
