The Arizona Wildcat men’s tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to the Utah Utes on Saturday. The teams met in Salt Lake City, Utah for the final match of regular season play.
In doubles play, the Cats fell on courts one and two and left the match on court three unfinished. First to finish was the team of Mario Urquidi on court one. The Arizona duo fell, 8-4, to Utah’s Dmytro Mamedov and Ben Tasevac. On court two, Sumeet Shinde and Carloz Bermudez wrapped up next in their match against Slim Hamza and Cedric Willems. Shinde and Bermudez dropped the match, 8-3. The loss marked the second for the Cats and the doubles point went to Utah.
With the Wildcat’s down 1-0 the match entered singles play where the Cats clinched one match. First to finish was Shinde on court two. The sophomore from Pune, India dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Mamedov. On court one, Thompson finished next as he took on Hamza. Hamza edged Thompson, a junior from Brisbane, Australia, 6-1, 6-2. Matt Dunn wrapped up next on court six where he took on Tasevac. Dunn, a freshman from Tucson, fell, 6-3, 6-2. The match marked the fourth point for the Utes and clinched the match in their favor.
Bermudez was next to finish in his match against Willems. The two fought a back and forth battle with Bermudez claimed the first set, 6-4, but dropped the second 7-6(3). The court entered a super-tiebreaker where Bermudez, a sophomore from Tucson, was topped 10-6. On court three, Urquidi wrapped up next in his match against Alejandro Medinilla. The two fought a close match but Urquidi, a junior from El Paso, Texas, was ultimately edged, 6-4, 7-5.
Last to finish was Naoki Takeda on court six. Takeda, a freshman from Osoka, Japan, earned Arizona’s only point of the day as he topped Devin Lane in straight sets. Takeda clinched the first set, 6-4, but dropped a close second set, 7-6(4). The court entered a super-tiebreaker where the two once again fought a close battle and Takeda came out on top, 11-9.
With the loss Arizona finishes the regular season 10-13 overall and 0-7 in Pac-12 play while Utah finishes at 12-11 overall and 2-5 in Pac-12 play.
The Cats will be back in action as they travel to Ojai, Calif. for the Pac-12 Championships. The tournament it set to begin on April 24 and continue through the 28th.
