I hope everyone had a chance to recharge their batteries this summer. Regina, Nick, Davis and I were fortunate to get away in July for a family vacation. The boys start school this week, and it’s hard to believe Nick will be a senior and Davis a junior. While I had a great time on vacation and enjoyed a little “R & R”, I’m fired up and ready to start the 2013-14 academic year. This is a great time a year as soccer, volleyball and football open camp, and many other student-athletes return for start of the year. I believe this is going to be another outstanding year for the Arizona Wildcats.

As you have probably seen, the opening of the Lowell-Stevens Football Facility has kept our department very busy throughout the summer. I want to thank a few of the many people whose generosity and incredible support made this a reality – Jeff and Sharon Stevens, Dave and Edith Lowell, Peter and Nancy Salter, Louis “Buzzard” Sands, and Jim and Vicki Click.

When we began this project we had three clear goals in mind: 1) recruit and develop elite student-athletes, 2) enhance revenue generation, and 3) improve fan amenities.  Jeff and Sharon Stevens believed in our vision, and their lead gift allowed us to set the project in motion. I can’t thank them enough for their leadership and commitment.

We want to get to the Rose Bowl. We want to be able to compete for championships in football. This is the foundation to give us the chance. This is the next step for us as a program.

We have to be strong in football and men’s basketball because it supports all of our programs, everything we do. In hiring Coach Rodriguez and completing the Lowell-Stevens Football Facility, we’re trying to do our part to give our fans reasons to want to be involved and engaged with our program. If anyone in this community is on the fence about coming to our home games and supporting our program, I want to let them know – If you are able to be here, we need you. Every person plays an important part – not just our high-level donors, but each and every season ticket holder, too.

We’ve made the commitment to a future of winning football, now we need your continued help to see this through. Thanks so much!

On July 27, we held a special seating open house at Arizona Stadium to share with you  the newnorth end zone lower bowl and club seating areas. It was a big success as fans raved about the facility, and over 250 season tickets were sold that day. If you didn’t make it to the July 27 event, I strongly encourage you to come down and check out the stadium.

We’re hosting another seating open house on Saturday, Aug. 17 as part of our Meet the Team event. Starting at 4:30 p.m., fans may enter the stadium through Gate 2 (northeast corner) and head up to the new north concourse. Seats available for season ticket purchase will be marked with tags. Ticket sales representatives will be on hand to assist those looking to buy.

We’ll have limited access tours also starting at 4:30 p.m. that will take you through some of the areas of the new facility (the weight room, lobby, Bear Down kitchen and Sands Club). Unfortunately we can’t show the general public everything because the team will be using the facility to prepare for that evening’s scrimmage.

The football team will participate in a scrimmage that is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. and last approximately 90 minutes. After the scrimmage, the players will be available for a one-hour autograph session. In an effort to get as many people through the autograph line as possible, we ask that you only bring one item per person. Thank you for your understanding. The new 2013 football poster will be available for free (while supplies last).  Admission and parking in Cherry Garage are also free.

Of course, you don’t need to wait until August 17 to purchase season tickets. Purchase now, or give the McKale Ticket Office a call at 520-621-2287 and set up an appointment to go over to the stadium when it is convenient for you!

Football single-game tickets go on sale to the general public this Saturday. Starting at 10 a.m. Tucson time, fans can purchase single-game tickets online at Single-game tickets can be purchased via phone or in person at the McKale Ticket Office starting Monday at 9 a.m.

Our Arizona Athletics Facebook page will host a special presale for the Nov. 23 Oregon game. Fans who “like” our Facebook page will have access to purchase single-game tickets to the Oregon game Thursday through Friday. Just “like” the Facebook page to get your tickets to this eagerly anticipated game.

Last month at Pac-12 Football Media Day, Commissioner Scott gave an update on negotiations between the Pac-12 Networks and DirecTV. The update was short as there aren’t any negotiations taking place. The Pac-12 Networks and DirecTV are as far apart as ever and there appears to be no signs of that changing anytime.

I know that’s not the news you want to hear if you are a DirecTV customer. The reality is if you want to get the Pac-12 Networks you need to drop DirecTV. DISH is available nationally and is offering a special offer for new customers plus an additional $50 savings for switching satellite providers.Click here for more information on this offer.

When we hear from our fans in regards to DirecTV the message is to reduce the asking price so that we can make a deal.   As much as we want an agreement with DirecTV, doing a different agreement with DirecTV puts us in a very challenging position moving forward. We have agreed to the exact same terms we are offering DirecTV with many other outlets. If we agree to a different model and terms with them then we will need to readdress the contracts with the other providers. That will impact the financial model that we will be depending on in the future to help with our significant facility needs that we must address going forward as well as other operating expenses. We hope that there can be a solution soon but until that time comes I want to encourage you to look at TV options that include the Pac-12 Networks.

Our track and field program has two outstanding student-athletes up for The Bowerman, Brigetta Barrett and Lawi Lalang. This award is considered the Heisman in the college track and field world. We are very proud of Brigetta and Lawi for being finalists so let’s do all we can to help them win. The results of an online fan vote will account for one full vote in the overall balloting process. Vote for Brigetta and Lawi at Voting ends Tuesday, August 13. The winners will be announced on December 18 in a special ceremony at the USTFCCCA Convention.
