Saturday was a historic day for our athletics department as we held a grand opening event for the Lowell-Stevens Football Facility. The opening recognized the most significant capital project for our program since the McKale Center’s opening in 1973. Thank you to everyone who attended the festivities and to all those whose donations made this vision a reality, especially Jeff and Sharon Stevens, Dave and Edith Lowell, Peter and Nancy Salter, Louis “Buzz” Sands, Jim and Vicki Click, and many others. This new facility will have an impact not just on the football program, but also on our other 19 sport programs. We strive to be a top-10 athletic department and this investment in success is a major step towards reaching that goal.

If you can make it to the football home opener on Friday, Aug. 30, we would appreciate you being at Arizona Stadium to support the team. Tickets are available here. If you’re joining us from the Phoenix area the Cat Cruiser is a convenient transportation option. Reservations are availablehere.

Please enjoy the two videos below, one a recap of Saturday’s grand opening and the other a tour of the facility I gave to the media earlier this month.

Speaking of openings, Bear Down Kitchen serves as the training table for our football team and many of our other student-athletes, but it will also be open to the public during the academic year starting Monday, Aug. 26. It will be open Monday through Friday and offer buffet-style options, made-to-order breakfast and lunch, a pizza oven, salad bar and great views of the stadium, field, campus and Catalina mountains. Breakfast will be served 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and costs $8.50 and lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and cost $12.50. The food service is all-you-can-eat. Bear Down Kitchen is located on the fourth level of the Lowell-Stevens Football Facility, enter through the lobby and up the stairs to the fourth level. On football game days Bear Down Kitchen will be closed to the public. It was very important to us to include the campus community in the utilization of this new facility. I hope to see you over there one of these days for breakfast or lunch.

Arizona fans proved Las Vegas was “Wildcat Country” in March for the 2013 Pac-12 Basketball Championships. Our fans took over the arena and the town was filled with people wearing the colors. It was amazing! We’re hoping to see a similar response next month when our football team heads up to Las Vegas to play UNLV. It’s a short trip for our alumni living in the southwest and it’s a great opportunity to impress bowl officials. The way a fan base travels to support their team plays a huge role in the bowl selection process. Let’s fill up the opponent’s stadium on Sept. 7 with Arizona fans (and remember to wear blue to stand out from UNLV’s red)! Tickets for this away game, and all away games, are on sale now at the McKale Ticket Office. Fans can purchase in person or over the phone by calling 520-621-CATS (2287). Our friends at Bon Voyage Travel have put together some outstanding travel packages that include transportation to and from the stadium, hotel and game tickets. Visit their website for details by

If you’re going to the game, make sure to check out the Alumni Association’s official UA Tailgate Party. Wilbur and the cheerleaders will make an appearance. There is a charge for food, but admission to the UA Tailgate Party is free.

New head coach Tony Amato and Arizona soccer will officially begin the 2013 season this Friday as they travel to Miami to face Florida International. The team has been training since camp opened on August 6 and looks to be competitive in the Pac-12 this upcoming season. The Wildcats return 18 players from last year’s squad and welcome in 13 new student-athletes, which includes 12 freshmen and one transfer. They will be led by senior Jazmin Ponce, who was named to the 2012 All-Pac-12 First-Team after scoring eight goals. Fans will be able to see the Cats in action for the first time on Friday, Aug. 30 at 4:30 p.m., when they host UC-Riverside at Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium. Season tickets are on sale now for only $50 (10 home matches). Click here for more information or to purchase your tickets today.

Don and Jodie Pruitt, letterwinners from baseball and softball respectively, found love right here within the walls of McKale. After attending UA as student-athletes, Don and Jodie headed north to Phoenix. Jodie is now a P.E. teacher, while Don works in real estate and coaches their boys in baseball. They consider themselves avid UA fans, and when asked what advice as letterwinners they’d give to current student-athletes, they said, “Enjoy every minute of it, get the most out of your experiences and have no regrets!” Thank you Don and Jodie for your continued support of Arizona Athletics. Bear Down and keep bleeding red and blue!

A reminder, volleyball will host a Red-Blue scrimmage Saturday at the McKale Center. The match starts at 2 p.m. and there is no charge for parking or admission. Come out and get a sneak peak at this year’s team…I love seeing our teams deliver season tickets to our fans. These last few days we’ve seen members from our
footballvolleyball and soccer teams hand deliver season tickets to some of our local fans (click on the links above to see a photo gallery from each delivery)…
