BERKLEY, Calif. –Arizona women’s soccer fell to California, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Goldman Field.
Arizona (5-4-3) offense recorded a total of nine shots with senior Jazmin Ponce leading the team with four, three on goal. Ponce scored her seventh goal of the season to put the Wildcats on the board in the 52nd minute.
California (9-0-3) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the third minute after Rachel Mercik recorded her fourth goal of the season. Ifeoma Onumonu scored the Golden Bears second goal in the 71st minute, crediting an assist to Genessee Daughetee. California outshot Arizona, 23-9, with Ariana Martinez and Onumonu leading the team with four.
"Our players did a great job to get back in the game in the second half," head coach Tony Amato said. "We scored a good equalizer as a result but it wasn't enough on the day. We continue to get better and will work to make those hard fought games turn into positive results for us."
In the net, goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman recorded eight saves for the Wildcats while California goalkeeper Emily Kruger recorded four saves.
Up next, the Cats are on the road again to Oregon to take on OregonState on Fri., Oct. 11 at 3 p.m. and Oregon on Sun., Oct. 13 at noon. The match vs. OregonState will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
