PAC-12 AD MEETINGS

I am writing this as I am flying from Oakland to Burbank to meet the football team for our game against USC. Their AD, Pat Haden, is sitting across the aisle from me on the flight, and so far, he hasn’t offered any secrets to their game plan that I can share with Coach Rodriguez.

Pat and I both attended our conference AD meetings for the last two days and while we had plenty of items to go over, I want to share some insight with you on two.

First, we spent a lot of time on the potential changing environment with the NCAA regarding governance, student-athlete welfare and recapturing the Director of Athletics voice in the process. I can tell you that we are united as ADs and we are hopeful that changes will be taking place that better intercollegiate athletics.

Second, we received our normal DirecTV updates. They still won’t agree to the same rates that many other satellite and cable providers have already agreed to. We are offering a rate that is more than competitive for this type of television content and DirecTV still believes that not enough of our fans will drop DirecTV to force their hand. I would encourage you to do what my family has done and switch to one of the providers that carry the Pac-12 Networks. The production and content is very good. I know that is not the news that our fans who have DirecTV want to hear but it is becoming the reality.

COACH LOPEZ DOING WELL AFTER SURGERY

As most of you are probably aware, baseball coach Andy Lopez underwent successful triple bypass heart surgery on Monday. He is currently resting comfortably and we’re looking forward to a complete and speedy recovery. The family wanted me to pass along its appreciation for the outpouring of support over the last few days and I also want to thank everyone for the kind notes and messages we received. The show of support is extremely important and we know it will help Coach Lopez as he works to get back to full strength.

ROCKY LAROSE SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT

This coming weekend, we will be celebrating Rocky LaRose’s retirement. Her impact on our athletics department is immeasurable and she will surely be missed. We look forward to sharing details on Rocky’s impact on Arizona and college athletics in next week's Wildcat Wednesday but wanted to share an opportunity to get involved in honoring Rocky's legacy.

Years ago, two alumni letterwinners who played for Rocky in 1980, Nan Barash and Jayne Hancock, gave the lead gifts to begin the Kathleen “Rocky” LaRose Scholarship Endowment. The endowment is awarded annually to a student-athlete who exemplifies leadership and is a good ambassador of the Arizona Softball program and Arizona Athletics.

In honor of her retirement, we invite all Wildcats to help us to continue on Rocky’s legacy by contributing to this endowment. Donations of $100 or more make you a Wildcat Club member and qualify you for the corresponding annual giving benefits.

MEN’S BASKETBALL UPDATES

As we get closer to the official start of the 2013-14 men’s basketball season, I wanted to give our loyal fans a few updates as we head into this exciting season. The first thing is that we are now three days away from the McDonald’s Red-Blue Game. I’ve talked about it a lot before, but the support of our fan base is incredible, and we’re very thankful to have the McKale Center sold out for the third year in a row. For the 14,545 fans who purchased tickets and are lucky enough to be here on Saturday, we have all the information you need for Saturday’s game right here. The doors open at 1 p.m. so please make plans to arrive early. For fans who are in another part of the country (or world), we want you to be a part of Saturday’s festivities by enjoying our free live stream beginning at 2:30 p.m. Please note the video board show begins at 2:35 p.m. and the team introductions will take place around 2:50 p.m. Make sure you’re in your seats (or in front of your screen) for the start of the show!

For our 2013-14 season ticket holders, your season ticket packets and parking passes, if applicable, will be delivered to your mailboxes in the next 10-14 days, so be on the lookout for those. One final note is that our 2013-14 men’s basketball schedule posters have arrived and are available for free in the Jim Click Hall of Champions, Monday-Friday, 9-5 p.m. All fans who have a ticket to Saturday’s Red-Blue game will receive the new poster. You can also purchase this year’s poster online by clicking here

FALL SOFTBALL STARTS THIS WEEK

Mike Candrea and the softball team start up fall
softball this week at Hillenbrand Stadium. The first Arizona game is this Friday with a 6 p.m. scheduled start time. This is an invitational, so start times might fluctuate based on other games. You can find a complete fall softball schedule by clickinghere. Admission to all fall softball games is free and seating is general admission. Something to consider, Arizona’s games on Saturday are scheduled to start at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. so you’ll want to plan accordingly for parking opposite the McDonald’s Red-Blue Game.

COMPLIANCE CORNER

With the retirement of Bill Morgan in May 2013, Gretchen Bouton has taken over Morgan’s duties as Associate A.D. for Compliance. A 14-year veteran in compliance, Bouton has worked with UA athletics for the past 10 years and brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and fresh ideas. In her brief time leading UA’s compliance efforts, she has already introduced fundamental changes within the department, including a compliance website for coaches, student-athletes and fans and an annual coach orientation. The website, set to go live later this year, will allow 24/7 access to forms and information necessary for compliance with NCAA legislation and UA policies and procedures. The annual coach orientation with each sport’s coaching staff educates the coaches on the proper policies and procedures at UA. The orientation process is on-going, encompassing any changes to policies. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the members of our compliance staff at 520-621-4796 or visit the compliance website here.
