Senior Carissa Crutchfield had a career-high 15 points, but it was not enough to overcome a second-half Stephen F. Austin rally and Arizona fell on Wednesday night, 60-56.

Junior Candice Warthen also scored in double-digits for Arizona, scoring 15 points and grabbing six rebounds.

Freshman LaBrittney Jones led the Wildcats with seven rebounds, as UA outrebounded the Ladyjacks, 38-35.

UA led by 15 points early in the second half, but the Ladyjacks held Arizona to 16 points the rest of the half and tied the score with less than three minutes remaining. They hit back-to-back three-pointers and the Wildcats were not able to overcome the deficit.

“We have to make plays,” Arizona head coach Niya Butts said. “We were very hesitant on the offensive end and we didn’t have that intensity on our end of the floor. When you don’t have that and you’re not making stops, a double-digit lead can go down fast.”

Arizona held SFA star Porsha Roberts to five total points, but Antionette Carter led the Ladyjacks with 15 and seven rebounds.

“I mean it’s just the fourth game of the season,” Warthen said. “We have the whole season ahead of us. We have a lot to learn and we have to be tougher.”

The Wildcats will hit the road again to take on Pacific University on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 6 p.m. MT.

Head Coach Niya Butts

Opening Statement:

“I’m very disappointed with the outcome tonight but if you don’t defend and you don’t score, it’s going to be tough to beat anybody. We didn’t do nearly enough, especially in the second half. We didn’t have enough to win this game.”

On what went wrong:

“We had them in some poor spots and we didn’t make enough plays to win this basketball game. We gave them confidence that they can come in here and beat us on our home floor and we don’t ever want to do that. We have to regroup and be ready for practice tomorrow.”

On offensive performance:

“We didn’t run one offensive play all the way through. It wasn’t because they made us break them but because we weren’t disciplined offensively. That leads to our 5-27 performance so hopefully we can go back to the film and learn from our mistakes. It’s one of those things where you need to tie your shoes back up tomorrow and be ready to play.”

Senior Guard Carissa Crutchfield

On the second half:

“I think we did not execute properly, we weren’t together, but we were trying, but we couldn’t get together all at the same time.”

On SFA’s defense:

“It’s more of us not executing our plays. We were all kind of in one area so it was just our mistakes.”

On Executing:

“We never came together I guess, but we will come back. We will practice and get our energy back.”

Junior Guard Candice Warthen

On the end of the game:

“It was disappointing. We had like a 12-point lead at half time and we didn’t come out like we should have. It’s always tough when you can’t get the team going offensively, to top that off we were fouling too much and couldn’t make any plays. We just couldn’t get any stops, when you can’t get any stops and you can’t score it’s all bad.”

On LaBrittney Jones:

“It’s always good to see freshman step up. It’s her first year and she is kind of getting the hang of things and she really wants to.”

On Offense:

“We just have to know when and where to be at the right times. We go over this every day, we do this repeatedly every day. It’s our issue, it’s nothing that the defense was doing it’s just us every time. So we just have to set up our plays and execute better.”

On being back on the court:

“It feels amazing, I have been out for a while and so it’s always good to return. So it feels pretty good to be back.”
