Arizona women’s tennis (8-1) bounced back after its first loss of the season on Friday to defeat Georgia State (2-4), 5-2 on Saturday in Lubbock, Texas.

“This was a significant win for our team,” Arizona Head Coach Vicky Maes said. “GSU came out very strong and won all the doubles. They literally took all the momentum away from us. For a while, it looked like they were going to clinch. However, our girls battled hard and worked their way back in to the matches.”

Senior Kim Stubbe fell in an early hole to Masa Grgan, but came back to win the second and third sets and the match at the No. 2 spot.

Freshman Lauren Marker, sophomore Shayne Austin and junior Laura Oldham all defeated their opponents in straight sets at the No. 3, 5 and 6 spots, while senior Akilah James won in three at No. 4.

“This was a very challenging match and I was pleased to see us turn things our way,” Maes said. “It was tough beginning to end--very good day for the Cats.”

Senior Lacey Smyth battled against No. 10 Abigail Tere-Apisah, but fell 6-4 in the third set.

The Wildcats will return home to host No. 65 San Diego on Saturday, Feb. 22 at noon at Robson Tennis Center.
