TUCSON, Ariz.Arizona women’s tennis (9-1) claimed a big victory in front of a great crowd Saturday defeating No. 74 San Diego (2-5), 7-0 at the Robson Tennis center.

“We are very happy with this win,” said Head Coach Vicky Maes. “USD always gives us trouble, but this time we truly got the best of them. The doubles were still a little shaky, but we got the point and that’s what matters most.”

The Cats started off the match strong claiming the doubles point. The tandems of senior Kim Stubbe with freshman Lauren Marker and seniors Akilah James and Susan Mc Rann took their matches, 8-5, and 8-1 respectively.

In singles play, junior Laura Oldham got out to a fast start in the No. 6 spot and never let up. She earned the second point for the Cats winning, 6-0, 6-0.

Sophomore Shayne Austin cruised to a victory in the No. 5 spot taking down Idil Haciraifoglu, 6-0, 6-2.

On court one Lacey Smyth defeated Shani Blecher to earn the match clinching point, 6-2, 6-2.

After dropping the first set, Marker, in the No. 4 spot, earned the fifth point for the Cats when her match was retired in the second set.

Stubbe got off to a tough start in the No. 2 spot dropping her first set 6-0, but fought all the way back and won in the third set in a tie-break, 7-6 (7-3).

James completed the sweep in the No. 3 spot winning her match, 7-5, 6-4.

“In singles everyone took care of business,” said Maes. “We really needes this decisive win heading into the match with San Diego State next week. That too promises to be a battle.”

The Wildcats will be back in action next weekend on Saturday, March 1 against San Diego State. The match will begin at 11 a.m. at the Robson Tennis Center.
