SEATTLE, Wash.No. 56 Arizona women’s tennis (11-1, 1-0 Pac-12) will return home after earning the first conference win of the season with a great 6-1 victory over the No. 28 Washington (10-4, 0-2 Pac-12) Huskies Sunday.

The win over the Huskies marks the first for Arizona in Seattle in the last six seasons.

The match started with another doubles point for the Cats as the No. 2 and 3 teams picked up the victories.

The pairings of senior Kim Stubbe with Lauren Marker and seniors Akilah James with Susan Mc Rann are both 3-0 since they have united.

“I’m so proud of our team after this win,” said Head Coach Vicky Maes. “It was a hard fought match and could have gone either way for a while. The girls had to work for every point. I was impressed by our doubles play, even at No. 1.”

In singles action the match was tied up early as senior Lacey Smyth dropped her match, 6-2, 6-0 to Elianne Douglas-Miron. Smyth now has a record of 7-3 in the No. 1 spot thus far.

No. 85 Stubbe tabbed another victory with a, 6-2, 6-2. This moves her to 10-1 on the season in the No. 2 spot and earned the second point of the match for the Cats.

Junior Laura Oldham extended the lead for the Cats as she picked up a, 6-3, 6-0 victory in the No. 6 spot. The junior is now 8-1 on the season.

The match was clinched when sophomore Shayne Austin finished a straight set victory over Riko Shimizu, 6-2, 7-5. Austin is now 6-1 to this point.

James and Marker earned the fifth and sixth points with hard fought victories taking the second and third sets.

Marker moves to 10-1 on the season and James will go to 7-1 in the No. 3 spot.

“The team just wasn’t going to let up today,” said Maes. “We’re in a good place and I expect we’ll continue to get better.”

The Cats will resume action against No. 29 Purdue to close out non-conference play on Wednesday March 19 at 1 p.m.
