BERKELEY, Calif.Senior No. 95 Lacey Smyth and freshman Lauren Marker produced two impressive wins for the No. 29 Wildcats (14-3, 3-2 Pac-12) Sunday, but the team dropped a tough match against No. 13 California 12-4 (5-0 in the Pac-12), 5-2.

Smyth defeated No. 29 Denise Starr, 6-4, 6-2 in the number one position. This is the first victory over a ranked opponent this season for Smyth.

Marker took down No. 14 Zsofi Susanyl, 6-2, 6-1 in the number three position for the first win over a ranked opponent of her Wildcat career.

"The girls gave it a strong effort in singles, but we came up short," Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. "The team needs to realize we need to go into these battles with the belief we can win."

In doubles action the Cats fell behind quickly when Smyth and sophomore Shayne Austin lost to the No. 60 doubles pair, Lynn Chi and Anett Schutting, 8-1.

On court three seniors Akilah James and Susan Mc Rann fell, 8-4.

On court two senior Kim Stubbe and Marker battled hard, but the point had already been decided.

The match was rescheduled from Saturday due to rain.

"We had our chances," Maes said. "We need to learn from this and get our heads ready for next week."

The Wildcats will return home to face off against Utah Friday Apr. 4 at 1:30 p.m.
