TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Arizona Intercollegiate Athletics mourns the loss of former head football coach and long-time Tucsonan Jim LaRue. He passed away Sunday night at the age of 89.
“We are saddened to hear the news of Coach LaRue’s passing,” Arizona Athletics Director Greg Byrne said. “He was a positive representative of our department and our football program. His teams and his legacy are an important part of our football program’s history.”
LaRue served as Arizona’s head football coach from 1959-66 and amassed a record of 41-37-2 in his eight seasons. He guided seven first-team all-conference players and one All-American (Eddie Wilson, QB, Associated Press).
After his tenure with the Wildcats, LaRue made a mark as secondary coach with the Chicago Bears, including the Bears' 1985 Super Bowl Championship season.
A funeral service will be held on Mon., April 6, at 1 p.m., at Christ Church United Methodist.
