The first edition of the weekly Taking a Splash with... Q&A features sophomore swimmer Nick Thorne about his life in and out of the pool.
Q: What made you start swimming/diving?
A: Parents put me in swim lessons, was a natural, and kept on going till I could join swim team
Q: What is your favorite memory from swimming/diving?
A: Breaking a high school district record from 1988 in the 200 IM
Q: Best part of swimming/diving at Arizona?
A: Cracking jokes with the team and coaches to take my mind off of the pain in the pool
Q: Is there something you have to do before every meet?
A: Eat a good breakfast and listen to some music, mostly rap and rock
Q: What is your favorite event to swim/dive in? Why?
A: 200 IM because it's just long enough to not be a sprint but short enough to not rethink your entire life (i.e. the mile)
Q: What is one thing you wish to accomplish this season?
A: Make it to NCAA as well as help the team place top-three at Pac 12's
Q: How do you balance academics with swimming/diving?
A: I try to finish all my homework and studying in the time I have between classes and practice, before I relax and power down for the night
Q: What is your favorite class?
A: My favorite class would have to be sign language
Q: Who is your biggest influence/inspiration?
A: Biggest influence is my parents. Without them and their support, I wouldn't be where I am today, and they are why I strive to be the best in and out of the pool.
Q: What is one interesting fact about yourself?
A: I am an eagle scout and can play four instruments
Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
A: Relax and watch Netflix, listen to music, or go adventuring on a hike
Q: Where do you see yourself in five years?
A: Having a job in a business field like marketing, with a car I work on during the weekends
Q: Who is your celebrity crush?
A: Mila Kunis
Q: What was your favorite childhood TV show?
A: SpongeBob
Q: If you could meet any singer/band, who would it be? Why?
A: I would meet Tupac Shakur because he simply is one of the best rappers of all time.
Q: If you could be any animal, what would you be? Why?
A: I would be a sloth and not have a care in the world, except for sleeping and finding a good leaf or two to eat
Q: What is your favorite animal?
A: The Red Panda
Q: Where would your dream vacation be?
A: The Bahamas
Q: Do you have an all-time favorite movie?
A: Either Step Brothers or Inception, both blew my mind
Q: What is your favorite kind of ice cream?
A: Cookies and cream, preferably with chocolate ice cream
