TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona women's golf team began play at the Wildcat Invitational at Sewailo Golf Club on Monday. The Wildcats are currently in second place after 36 holes after finishing at 575 (-1). The team carded a collective 282 (-6) in the first round and 293 (+5) in the second.
Sophomore Krystal Quihuis is leading the team right now, earning herself a 68 (-4) and a 71 (-1) in the opening two rounds. She is currently in fourth place, four strokes off of the individual lead.
Freshman Haley Moore notched a 72 (E) and a 71 (-1) today, and is currently tied for ninth place. Freshman Gigi Stoll started with a 72 (E) and ended with a 74 (+2) to put her tied for 15th place. Senior Lindsey Weaver netted a 70 (-2) and a 77 (+5) after both rounds concluded. She is currently tied for 18th place. Junior Wanasa Zhou rounds out the ream at 74 (+2) and 79 (+7) after her play. She is tied for 57th place.
“The team had a good performance overall today,” said head women's golf coach Laura Ianello. “We struggled in the second round but we are excited to have a chance to win tomorrow. Krystal Quihuis led the way and has a great opportunity to have her first victory. Our freshman, Gigi Stoll and Haley Moore, are also fighting very hard. Jessica Vasliic had a stellar second round and I know she will come through with an even better round tomorrow.”
In the individual competition, junior Jessica Vasilic had a strong finish to the day. After an opening-round 75 (+3), Vasilic responded with a 67 (-5) in the second round. She is tied for fifth place overall. Freshman Danielle Lee has notched a 78 (+6) and an 85 (+15) to put her in a tie for 77th place. Sophomore Natalia Forero took an 84 (+12) and an 83 (+11) to give her 81st place.
Arizona trails Arizona State by one stroke in the team competition. Linnea Strom of ASU is topping the individual competition with a score of 9 under par.
