TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Arizona women’s soccer is off to the best start the program has seen since 2008 when the Wildcats also won their first two matches. On Fri., Aug. 23 the Wildcats won their season opener, 4-2, at Florida International and picked up their second win on Sun., Aug. 25 at Florida Atlantic.
In Friday’s match against FIU, sophomore Kaitlyn Lopez scored her first career goal in the first five minutes of the game to put the Wildcats up 1-0. Senior Jazmin Ponce and junior Alexandra Doller also scored goals in the victory. Ponce led the Wildcats in shots with nine, including two on goal.
Playing at FAU on Sunday, the Wildcats were tied 0-0 with 11 minutes to go in the match when Ponce scored the game winning goal. Junior goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman recorded two saves en route to a shutout against the Owls.
This Friday, the Wildcats open up their home slate with a non-conference match against UC Riverside at Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. Admission is free to all fans.
