Box Score

TUCSON - (NOTE: UA plays Mississippi at approximately 7:20 p.m. tonight. Lengthy games pushed the starting times of all but the first game of the tournament back.)

No. 2 Arizona showed its mettle without its Hall of Fame coach, pasting New Mexico, 12-0, in the Cats' season opener.

Acting head coach Larry Ray and acting associate head coach Nancy Evans apparently had no trouble getting the Cats ready for a year in which head coach Mike Candrea will be absent due to duties as U.S. Olympic Team mentor.

Alicia Hollowell pitched a one-hitter and struck out 10 in the five-inning game to lead the way in the circle and UA's offense made the most of nine hits in Game Four of the Pepsi Arizona Softball Classic Tournament. The game ended on the eight-run mercy rule.

Arizona scored an unearned run in the top of the first. Autumn Champion reached on an error, took second on a wild pitch, stole third, and cross the plate on Mackenzie Vandergeest's infield single.

The Cats extended the lead to 10-0 in the second inning, sending 12 batters to the plate and collecting seven hits. Kristie Fox led off with a single and Shelly Shultz drew a walk. After Candace Abrams forced Fox at third, Samantha Quintero singled to center to load the bases. Freshman center fielder Caitlin Lowe collected her first collegiate hit, knocking in two runs with a single off the third basemen's glove. Champion hit a bunt single to re-load the bases and Wendy Allen followed with a three-run triple. Vandergeest drove in Allen with a ground ball to first.

Jackie Coburn drew a walk, Fox socked a double to move her to third, then Shultz blasted a three-run homer to left.

Lowe walked and moved to third on another hit by Champion, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Allen to make it 11-0.

New Mexico's Stephanie Kennedy had the hit off Hollowell, literally, knocking a sharp grounder off Hollowell's glove and beating a throw in the third inning. The Lobos, who dropped a 3-2 decision to UNLV in the third game of the tournament earlier, fell to 0-2 on the year.
