NCAA CONSIDERS MOVE TOWARD 'FULL COST'

The NCAA's Division I board of directors could consider recommending later this month that individual scholarships for student-athletes be raised to the full cost of attending school. In the case of the University of Arizona, a suggested increase of as much as $2,000 under this stipulation might boost our scholarship costs by $300,000 - $500,000 per year, a very sizeable expense. Sentiment in the past year has grown to find ways to put more money into the hands of student-athletes as their out-of-pocket expenses beyond tuition, board and books increases. Some analyses peg the median college costs at public universities to exceed scholarship values by as much as $4,000. Needless to say, such a move would benefit many student-athletes but also put more strain on institutions and conferences to maximize real income and development programs. It's not a done deal, but there is widespread support for the "full cost of attendance" changes to scholarship resourcing and you can count me as one who supports the idea.

EVERY DOWN, BEAR DOWN

We certainly know that it has been a tough start to our football season.  At the same time we faced a difficult schedule, to say the least.  I know it, our coaches know it, our team knows it, and you the fans know it.  We still have a lot to play for and need to get on the right track this weekend at Oregon State.  We will have a week after Oregon State to rest and get a few team members healthy and then our team needs your support when we welcome UCLA into town on October 20th. Go Cats!

ARIZONA BASKETBALL

The men’s basketball Red-Blue game is right around the corner. Join us on October 22nd at 2pm as we tip-off the 2011-12 season, and help us pack the house and create an electric atmosphere at McKale. Our marketing team just put the finishing touches on one of the coolest posters we’ve ever produced and we are really excited to debut them at the game. As always we’ll have a pre-scrimmage slam dunk contest with a few celebrity judges and we are inducting two Wildcats into the Ring of Honor. We hope you join us in celebrating Chase Budinger and Derrick Williams as we reveal their place among other Wildcat greats. Tickets are just $7 for adults and $3 for youth with advance purchase, and $10 for adults and $5 for youth on the day of the game.Plus, if you purchase tickets to the UCLA football game on Thursday, October 20th you can add Red-Blue Game tickets for only $3 each! This offer is only available in advance when purchasing UCLA football tickets. I hope to see you there.

Spread the word and encourage others to join and help us reach our next goal of 10,500 members by June 30, 2012. We’re on our way to ultimately reaching 12,000 members by 2013, putting our membership on top of the Pac-12.
