TUCSON, Ariz. – Head coach David Rubio and the Arizona volleyball team unveiled its 2013 schedule on Monday. The excited slate features 18 home matches, 15 matches against teams that participated in the NCAA Tournament last year and 14 matches airing live on television.
The Wildcats will host three tournaments beginning with the Arizona Invitational to open the season. Arizona will open the tournament will Morgan State on Friday, August 30 before closing out the event on Saturday against Central Arkansas and Kansas. Central Arkansas finished with an impressive 30-5 overall record last season including a trip to the NCAA Tournament, while Kansas finished the season with a 26-7 record and a No. 25 ranking. The Jayhawks also made a trip to the NCAA Tournament last year and earned a first round victory over Cleveland State.
Arizona will host the Arizona Desert Classic just a week later. The Wildcats will face Butler on Friday, September 6 before matches with Eastern Kentucky and Utah Valley on Saturday.
UA will hit the road for the first time the following week with the Verizon Volleyball Challenge in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Cats open the tournament against Northwestern on Sept. 12 before facing Portland State on the following day. Arizona will close out the tournament against host Hawaii. The Rainbows finished last season ranked No. 11 after an impressive 27-3 campaign, while also earning a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Arizona will close out regular season tournament play at home with the Wildcat Classic. The Wildcats host Loyola Maryland on Friday, Sept. 20 before facing Wofford and UC Santa Barbara the following day.
In Pac-12 play, the Wildcats will play all opponents twice, with the exception of California and Stanford, which they will play just once each.
Arizona opens the conference schedule on the road with the Territorial Cup rivalry against Arizona State on Sept. 24. The match is set for an 8:00 p.m. start and will air on the Pac-12 Networks. The Cats will remain on the road as they travel to face California on Sept. 27, which will also be shown on the Pac-12 Networks.
The Wildcats open the home portion of the conference slate on Oct. 4 when defending national runner-up Oregon comes to McKale Center. Arizona will host Oregon State two days later at 11 a.m. on the Pac-12 Networks.
Following the brief homestand, Arizona will head to the Great Northwest beginning on Oct. 11. The Wildcats open the weekend against Washington on Friday, Oct. 11 at 8:00 p.m. before facing Washington State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Both matches will air live on the Pac-12 Networks.
The Cats return home just a week later for a pair of matches against UCLA and USC on the Pac-12 Networks. Arizona will face the Bruins on Friday, Oct. 18 and the Trojans on Sunday, Oct. 20.
Arizona will then hit the road for its longest stretch of the season as it will play four straight matches away from McKale Center. The road swing will begin with a trip to face Colorado on Friday, Oct. 25 before playing Utah two days later at 2:00 p.m. on the Pac-12 Networks. The road trip continues on Saturday, Nov. 2 with a contest against Oregon. The swing concludes with Oregon State just a day later on the Pac-12 Networks at 3:00 p.m.
After the longest road trip of the season, the Wildcats return home for the longest conference homestand of the season. All four of the matches on the home swing will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks. Arizona will host Washington State on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 7:00 p.m. and Washington on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. The four-match homestand will conclude with a match against Utah on Thursday, Nov. 14 and a contest with Colorado on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
The Wildcats will hit the road one last time during the regular season with a trip to Los Angeles. Arizona will open the weekend against USC on Friday, Nov. 22 before closing the trip at UCLA on Sunday.
Arizona concludes the regular season at home with a pair of matches. The Wildcats host Stanford on Wednesday, Nov. 27 at 6:00 p.m. before closing the regular season with the Territorial Cup rivalry against Arizona State on Friday on the Pac-12 Networks.
The Wildcats return 10 letterwinners from last season’s 16-15 squad, including All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention Madi Kingdon and Pac-12 All-Freshman Honorable Mention selections Halli Amaro and Olivia Magill.
