Four Cats to Compete in World University Games

TUCSON, Ariz. The University of Arizona swimming and diving program will be well-represented at the 2013 World University Games, as four Wildcats will compete at the event which takes place July 10-16 at the Aquatics Palace in Kazan, Russia.

Giles Smith and Matt Barber are current Wildcats that will compete in the swimming competition, while former Wildcat Adam Small will also participate. In addition, Arizona diver Samantha Pickens has already begun representing Team USA at the event. Pickens already got off to a strong start as she finished fifth in the 1m competition on Sunday. Meanwhile, Arizona associate head coach Rick DeMont is on the men’s swimming coaching staff for Team USA.

Smith will take part in the 4x100 relay, Barber will swim the 200m freestyle and Small will compete in the 50m freestyle. On the women's side, Pickens will also compete in the 3m diving competition.

For the first time, the World University Games will be available to a national television audience in the United States. ESPNU and ESPN3 are set to carry 115 live hours of the event, which features student-athletes aged 17-28. Swimming events will be broadcast live on ESPN3 July 10-16 beginning at 11:00 a.m. EDT each day, while the women's diving 3m competition final will air live on ESPN3, July 10 beginning at 5:40 a.m. EDT.

Taking place every two years, the World University Games are an international multi-sport event organized for university athletes by the International Sports Federation (FISU). Swimmers on the 2013 World University Games Team roster were selected based upon their performance at the 2012 U.S. Open Championships. All athletes selected for the team must be at least 17 years old and less than 28 years old on January 1, 2013.
