The University of Arizona men’s golf team was among a select group of collegiate programs honored with the Golf Coaches Association of America’s (GCAA) Team Academic Award on Wednesday.

A total of 143 teams across all NCAA divisions, NAIA and NJCAA were recognized as having collective grade-point averages of 3.00 or higher, a new high in the five-year existence of the award.

“As a program, we’ve outlined goals that emphasize success in the classroom, as well as on the course,” Arizona head men’s golf coach Jim Anderson said. “Our team, from top to bottom, is committed to excelling in those areas. I couldn’t be more proud of their body of work in the classroom over the last year.”

To be eligible for GCAA All-Academic Team honors, an institution must submit GPAs for each player on its official squad list for the academic year.

Last week, rising senior Erik Oja and recently graduated Trent Redfern were honored by the GCAA as All-America Scholars. Student-athletes must carry a minimum GPA of 3.2 and meet other on and off-course requirements to garner those honors.

Both Oja and Redfern, along with rising junior Alex McMahon and rising senior Benson Liu, earned Pac-12 All-Academic honors earlier this spring in what has been a productive year in the classroom for Anderson’s squad.

“Having two All-America Scholars this year is a great accomplishment, and I’m confident that we’ll have more candidates in the years to come,” Anderson said. “Erik and Trent led by example in the classroom this year, and that will filter down to our younger guys and really help us develop consistent academic success.”

The 2013-14 Arizona men’s golf schedule is expected to be released in the near future. Follow @UAWildcatsGolf on Twitter for more information on the program.
