TUCSON, Ariz. Arizona football spent a sunny Tuesday morning at Kindall Field/Sancet Stadium for a two-hour practice. The Cats sported shorts and helmets on the grass fields. Below are head coach Rich Rodriguez’s comments following practice:

Thoughts on the practice:

“We were just in shorts today. I had to get on them a little early today to get them cranked up but after that the intensity was better after the sixth or seventh period. I come out here fired up because I’m ready to go from day one. I was probably going to get on them early no matter what happened. I had an idea that we weren’t going to practice tonight so I wanted to get our work in. We’re going to have a long walk through today so it’s not really going to be a practice but I want to get out here in the heat and run through everything, and also introduce NAU this afternoon.”

On the number of true freshmen who could play this year:

“We are probably going to sit down tomorrow and look at the freshmen who could play and who will redshirt. We don’t have to make the decision right now. I thought a bunch of them would help and it looks like a lot of them will.”

On freshman Nate Phillips:

“Nate is a very conscientious guy. Of the freshmen, he and Samajie Grant are getting a lot of reps with the ones and twos, so those guys are getting ready to play. We saw Nate on film and liked him. We saw him in our 7-on-7 camp and we liked him. He’s a very competitive guy and he’s going to have a good career here.”

On the center position:

“Steven Gurrola has had a couple really good practices back-to-back and he’s doing really well. Carter Wood has gotten better as well, and we know (Chris) Putton can play there, too, so we’ll be alright.”
