TUCSON, Ariz. – Former University of Arizona baseball pitcher Preston Guilmet was promoted to the Cleveland Indians on Sunday, becoming the school’s 68th player to reach the pinnacle of professional baseball.

A Friday night starter the majority of his Wildcat career, Guilmet has starred as a closer in the Indians organization, which drafted him with 275th pick in the ninth round of the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. In 34 games this season with the Columbus Clippers of the Triple-A International League, Guilmet posted a 2.32 earned run average, a 2-4 record and 16 saves.

During his four-year collegiate career at Arizona, Guilmet compiled 419 strikeouts to rank second in program history and fourth-most in Pac-10 Conference history. He garnered numerous national and conference honors, and helped pitch Arizona to a pair of 40-win seasons in 2007 and 2008.

A native of Citrus Heights, Calif., Guilmet was named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year in 2007 after leading the Wildcats with a 12-2 record on the mound en route to second place finish in the conference. During that sophomore season, Guilmet was named a first team All-American by both Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America, and was a semifinalist for the Roger Clemens Award.

Throughout his career, Guilmet collected conference player of the week honors six times and was named to the all-conference teams three times. He finished with 28 career victories, 11th-most in school history, and pitched more innings than any other player in program history (416.2).

Guilmet is the 12th Wildcat pitcher coached by Andy Lopez to reach Major League Baseball since taking over at the school in 2002.
