HARVEY ANNOUNCES 2011-12 NLIs

TUCSON - University of Arizona Director of Men's and Women's Cross Country and Track and Field Fred Harvey and his staff have announced the signing class for the 2011-12 season. Harvey and his assistants will welcome 14 NLI student-athletes, one financial aid agreement signee and one walk-on.

"We filled our squad with some good multi-event people, heptathletes and decathletes that are going to cover a lot of different areas for us and are able to come in and be impact people right away," Harvey said. "We feel really good about the young ladies and the guys we have coming in to fill those spots. We're really excited about this class; we have an extremely strong class."

Stephanie Bulder graduated from Saugus High School in Saugus, Calif. As a distance runner, she holds personal bests of 4:47.81 in the 1,600 meters, 10:30.70 in the 3,200 meters, 17:01.00 in the three-mile run, 17:46.00 in the 5,000 meters and 2:20.68 in the 800 meters.

Nicole Corbin is a native of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.and a graduate of Tesoro High School. She will compete in the middle distance and distance events for Arizona. Her personal bests include 4:54.43 in the 1,600 meters, 10:49.16 in the 3,200 meters, 17:27.40 three-mile run, 18:34.00 in the 5,000 meters, 2:16.66 in the 800 meters and a mile time of 5:03.89.

Clea Formaz is a distance runner from Pfaffikon, Switzerland and a graduate of STV Pfaffikon-Freienbach. Her personal bests are 4:38 in the 1,500 meters, 10:40 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 17:09 in the 5,000 meters.

Shale' Garland is a sprinter from Inglewood, Calif. (Inglewood High School) and will transfer to Arizona from El Camino Community College in Los Angeles, Calif.Garland will focus on the 200 and 400 meters. She concluded a tremendous career at ECC winning both the 400meters in 54.47 (remaining undefeated) and the 200meters in 24.38 at the California Junior College State Championships. Garland is also the ECC school record holder at 200 meters (23.88) and 400 meters (54.12).

Azia Walker graduated from Long Beach Poly High School in Long Beach, Calif. She will run the 200 and 400 meters for Arizona. At the 2011 CIF State Championships, Walker finished sixth in the 400 meters (55.73). In 2009 she was the Ohio State Champion in the 400 meters as a sophomore. Her personal bests are 24.1 (hand time) in the 200 meters and 54.48 in the 400 meters.

"We did a good job of bringing in some good female 400-meter runners to continue what we're doing with the long relays," Harvey said. "We ran a 3:31 last year which was the seventh-fastest time in the country so plugging in Azia Walker and Shale' Garland is really going to help us fortify that area."

Jasmine Hall is a jumper and sprinter from Santa Clarita, Calif. (Valencia High School). Her personal bests are 12.40a in the 100 meter sprint, 24.87a in the 200 meter sprint, 5-7 in the high jump and 18.5 feet in the long jump.Hall will train as a hepthathlete for the Wildcats.

Shakayla McEaddy is a jumper and sprinter from Tucson, Ariz. and a graduate of Catalina Foothills High School. She was the 2011 Arizona State Champion in triple and high jump. McEaddy recorded personal bests in both events, jumping 36-3.5 in the triple jump and 5-8 in the high jump. She also won the high jump at the Mario Castro Invitational and will train as a hepthathlete for the Wildcats.

Amber Passalaqua is a native of Pine Bush, N.Y. (Pine Bush HS) and will transfer to Arizona from Syracuse. She competes in the pentathlon and the heptathlon. As a sophomore in 2011, she finished sixth in the indoor pentathlon (3,330 points) and fourth in the outdoor heptathlon (4,792 points) at the BIG EAST Championships. As a freshman in 2010, she was sixth in the indoor heptathlon and 14th in the outdoor heptathlon at the conference championships.

While competing for Pine Bush High School, Passalaqua earned All-America status during her senior year and won two-straight championships in the pentathlon. She was also a member of state championship medley relay team in 2008.

Hanna Peterson is a native of Riverside, Calif. and a graduate of Martin Luther King High School. Peterson will run the middle distance and distance events for Arizona. Her personal bests are 4:57 in the 1,600 meters, 10:49 in the 3,200 meters and ran a cross country 5,000 meters in 17:56.

Haley Stenquist is a distance runner from Tucson, Ariz. and a graduate of Sabino High School. She finished as an All-American at the USA Junior Championships in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:56. She finished third at the ArizonaState Cross Country Championships. During her senior season, she doubled at the Desert Classic Invitational, winning both the 1,600 meters in 5:08.01 and the 3,200 meters in 11:28.21. At the Willie Williams Classic, she recorded a personal best in the 3,200 with a time of 10:47.

Kevin Bierig is a distance runner from Spokane, Wash. and a graduate of Lewis and Clark High School. During his senior cross country season, Bierig was the 2010 Meadlander (formerly Highlander) Senior Champion, the 2010 Bob Firman Invitational Runner-Up and the 2010 Mountain West Classic Runner-Up (announced as a top-10 all-time performance for the course). During the track season of his senior year, Bierig was a Washington District 8 4A Qualifier, as well as a Washington Eastern Regional Qualifier.

Keegan Cooke, a native of Harare, Zimbabwe, will specialize in the heptathlon and the decathlon for the Wildcats. He is transferring to Arizona from OrangeCoastCommunity College in Costa Mesa, Calif.

Jovon Cunningham is a jumper from Redding, Calif. and a graduate of Enterprise High School. As a junior, Cunningham marked a personal best of 50-8.25 to win the triple jump at the CIF State Championships. As a senior, he was hampered by a hamstring injury and was not able to successfully defend his triple jump title. He also holds bests of 22-4.25 in the long jump and 6-6 in the high jump.

Cameron Foreman is a graduate of Georgetown High School in Georgetown, Texas. As a distance runner, his personal bests are 1:54.8 in the 800 meters, 4:14 in the 1,600 meters and he ran a cross country 5,000 meters in 15:54.

Tucson, Ariz. native and Catalina Foothills High School graduate Dylan Souza will compete in the middle distance events for the Wildcats. He won the 2011 Arizona State Championship in the 800 meters with a time of 1:53.40. Souza was also the 2011 Arizona State Championships Runner-Up at 400 meters with a time of 49.13. He was selected as the 2011 Tucson Citizen Southern Arizona Track Athlete of the Year. He was also a member of the 2010 and 2011 Arizona State Champion 4x400-meter relay, running the anchor leg. He was the Willie Williams Classic 800-meter Champion in 2010.

Lezo Urreiztieta will join the squad as a walk-on. He is a native of Tucson, Ariz. and is a graduate of Canyon Del Oro High School. He will compete in the various hurdle events for the Wildcats. Urreiztieta was the 2011 Arizona Division II State Champion in the 110-meterhurdles with a personal best time of 14.43.
