TUCSON, Ariz. -

Arizona women's tennis junior Akilah James (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was awarded the 2013 Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced this week.

James was given the award for the southwest region after compiling winning records in both singles and doubles play and emerging as a leader on the Arizona women's tennis team.

The Cissie Leary Award goes to a Division I women's player who displays inspiring dedication and commitment to her team, which has enhanced her team's performance and exemplified the spirit of college tennis. It dates back to 1997 and is memory of the late and widely admired Penn women's tennis coach Cissie Leary.

>Akilah James is a wonderful young woman who possesses a great competitive intensity that draws a lot of people to her court," Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. "She is a committed teammate and has an enormous heart. Her fun-loving spirit is infectious and she can put a big smile on anyone's face. This is a fitting award for Akilah who has so much to offer and will continue to be a positive force on our Wildcat team."
