Labonté Finishes Sixth At World U. Games

TUCSON - The University of Arizona Wildcat track and field program had two athletes competing at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia. Former Wildcat Edgar Rivera-Morales competed for Mexico in the men’s high jump and senior-to-be Julie Labonté competed in the women’s shot put for Canada.
 
Labonté earned a sixth-place finish in the women’s shot put competition that took place on Thursday. She posted a mark of 57-9 (17.60m) on her fifth throw. In the qualifying round on Wednesday, Labonté took fourth place in group “B” with a toss of 57-3.5 (17.46m). She only needed one toss to qualify for the final. In the final, her first toss was 55-0.25 (16.77m). She then fouled her second toss. On the third attempt, Labonté threw 56-4 (17.17m) which was good for seventh place at the time and gave her three additional throws. She fouled on her fourth try and then had her best mark of the competition in round five at 57-9. In the final round, Labonté threw 56-8 (17.27m).
 
In the qualifying round of the men’s high jump on Sunday, Rivera-Morales cleared 7-2.5 (2.20m) on his first attempt. He also cleared 6-10.75 (2.10m) and 7-0.5 (2.15m) on his first attempts. In Tuesday’s final, Rivera-Morales finished in 10th place overall with a clearance of 7-0.5.
