TUCSON, Ariz. Arizona football head coach Rich Rodriguez and his team opened the 2013 campaign with their first official workout of the season at Kindall Field/Sancett Stadium on Saturday. The Wildcats worked out in shorts and helmets on day one.

Below are comments from Rodriguez and senior linebacker Marquis Flowers following practice.

Rich Rodriguez

On the impression of day one:

“It was about what I thought. It was a pretty good effort by a lot of guys but some weren’t in shape. We have a handful of upperclassmen that will be doing a little extra to get in shape. They have to understand what it takes to be an elite athlete. An elite athlete doesn’t show up in August and expect to be ready to go so we’ll see what happens.”

On what is expected of the quarterbacks on day one:

“Execution. I can tell if they worked on their games throughout the summer by execution or lack thereof and I saw some execution today and a lack thereof as well.”

On what jumped out on day one:

“I think we are better defensively which I thought we would be. Guys are moving around a little bit and understanding a little better and we have more competition just with sheer numbers. It looks like we can line up three units and compete so that is encouraging.”

Marquis Flowers

On if the defense is improved from last year:

“I think we should wait until the season starts to say that but the first day was good. Obviously being last in every category, we take that very personal, so this whole offseason we have been working into spring ball and we have more depth. I think we played hard today.”

On the young linebackers:

“I think we have a tremendous group of linebackers. On the young guys look good and I think they are going to contribute right away. They are good players, good teammates and they are our kind of guys. They are going to step in and get some experience under their belts and they should be good.”

On what it feels like to have a full season of linebacker under the belt:

“It definitely feels a lot better because I’ve prepared the whole offseason for linebacker, whether it’s strong side or weakside. I’ve gained a little bit of weight, got stronger in my upper body and I’ve been working at linebacker so it feels really good to come in at linebacker.”

The Wildcats will continue preseason camp tomorrow evening.
