TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona women’s soccer heads to Florida this weekend to take on Florida International on Fri., Aug.23 at 4 p.m. in Miami, Fla. The Wildcats will also play at Florida Atlantic on Sun., Aug. 25 at 10 a.m. in Boca Raton, Fla.
About the Panthers: Florida International welcomes back 10 starters from the previous season along with six newcomers. Last season, FIU posted a record of 13-6-2 under seventh-year head coach Thomas Chestnutt. The Panthers finished the 2012 season as co-champion of the regular season and runner-up of the Conference USA tournament.
About the Owls: New to the Florida Atlantic soccer staff, Patrick Baker is in his first year as head coach for the Owls. Last season, the team finished with a 5-13 record in the Sun Belt Conference. The Owls welcome back 12 returners along with 20 newcomers.
About the Returners for Arizona: Senior Jazmin Ponce will lead the Wildcat squad this year after finishing the 2012 season as a Pac-12 First-Team All-Conference performer, recording eight goals in 85 shot attempts. Ponce is a nominee for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award. Also returning for the Wildcats is junior goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman. She recorded 108 saves with four shutouts in the 2012.
Amato Era: Head coach Tony Amato will embark on his debut season as Arizona women’s soccer head coach in 2013. Amato was the head coach at Stephen F. Austin for three years and led the team to conference titles in 2011 and 2012. The Ladyjacks made an NCAA appearance in 2012 and Amato was named Southland Conference Coach of the Year in both 2011 and 2012. He has a career record of 127-48-14 in his 10 seasons as a head coach. Amato is accompanied by assistant coaches Paul Nagy and Kylie Louw.
Up Next: The Wildcats return to Tucson for their first home match against UC Riverside on Fri., Aug. 30 at Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium. Match time is set for 4:30 p.m. and admission is free for all fans. On Sun., Sept. 1, the Cats are on the road again to Columbus, Ohio to take on OhioState at 3 p.m.
Tickets: Season tickets for the 2013 season are still available with at a rate of $50, including admission for all nine home games. Discounts on season tickets are available for any Arizona faculty/staff, active military, seniors (55+) and youth. Groups with 15 or more can purchase group tickets for $4 per ticket.
