TUCSON, Ariz. –University of Arizona women’s soccer team battled Kansas to a 1-1 double overtime draw in their first match of the Sun Devil Classic Friday night.
Arizona (3-0-2) junior transfer Alexandra Doller scored her fourth goal of the season with five minutes left in regulation to tie Kansas (3-1-1) 1-1, crediting Ana-Maria Montoya with the assist. Doller’s goal sent the Wildcats and Jayhawks to a double overtime battle.
After an hour, 15 minute rain and lightning game delay in the first half, the Wildcats were able to come out in the second half strong on offense recording eight of the 10 total shots. Senior Jazmin Ponce led Arizona with three shots, one on goal. Kansas out-shot the Wildcats, 26-12, with Jamie Fletcher leading the Jayhawks with six.
"Kansas did a good job of putting us on our heels early in the match and deserved to take the lead," head coach Tony Amato said. "I thought we regrouped after the break and started to compete at the level required."
In an impressive performance, goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman propelled the defense with seven saves while Kansas goalkeeper Kaitlyn Stroud recorded six saves for the Jayhawks.\
"I am very proud of the resiliency our players showed to grab the late goal and force the match into extra time," Amato said. "We learned more about our team tonight and will use that to improve for Sunday's match."
Up next, the Wildcats will compete against Illinois in their second match of the Sun Devil Classic. Kick off is set for 11 a.m. at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.
