The Arizona men’s golf team will get back to action on Friday when it opens the 58th annual William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M.
The 16-team tournament will feature 36 holes of play on Friday and a final 18 on Saturday, with both days’ play commencing at 6:45 a.m. MST. The University of New Mexico will once again host the event at the par-72 UNM Championship Golf Course.
“I know we have a team that will go out and compete, and this is a tournament we set our sights on,” Arizona head coach Jim Anderson said. “Obviously, I’m very familiar with the area and think very highly of the program at New Mexico. Getting the team ready for this tournament has been a lot of fun because I know the course and it’s been great to gameplan with our guys.”
Anderson is a 2003 graduate of New Mexico and a four-year letterman on the school’s golf team. He also spent two years (2007-09) as an assistant coach at his alma mater.
Senior Erik Oja and junior Alex McMahon will once again play in the top two spots, respectively, in the Arizona lineup at the Tucker. Oja leads the team with a 72.20 stroke average and McMahon, coming off of a tie for third at the Golfweek Conference Challenge, ranks second with a mark of 73.00.
In addition to its five-man lineup, UA will play three individuals at this week’s event. Senior Christian Colegrove and juniors Ricky Lee and Brenden Redfern will also make the trip to Albuquerque for the competition.
“This early in the year, we don’t know who our five best players are,” Anderson said. “When we do know who our five best players are, we still want our other players competing to try to earn one of those five spots. This is a great opportunity to see some guys compete in an event setting, and it will give us that much more experience as we head deeper into the season.”Live results for the Tucker will be available via golfstatresults.com.
