TUCSON, Ariz. – Senior Fredrik Ask won both of his singles matches on the day to open up the Aztec Invitational in San Diego on Friday.
Ask first defeated Pacific’s Denis Stolyarov in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, then continued his hot streak by putting away Ahmad Saleem of Grand Canyon University, 6-0, 6-0.
“Fred did a great job beginning to end,” said assistant coach Arron Spencer. “He played with a purpose and we will look for him to build on that tomorrow.”
Junior Carlos Bermudez and sophomore Matt Dunn split their matches, going 1-1 apiece. Bermudez defeated Andrew Malozsak of UC San Diego 6-2, 6-2 before losing to Adrian Legaretta of Grand Canyon University, 6-4, 6-4. Dunn lost his first match 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(8) to San Diego’s Andrew Carlisle but regrouped in the afternoon to defeat Brenden Wee of UCLA, 6-3, 6-2.
In the lone doubles match of the day for Arizona, Bermudez and Dunn teamed up to defeat Max Jiganti and Kona Luu of UC San Diego, 8-3. The win puts Bermudez and Dunn at 3-2 on the year as a pair.
Ask and sophomore Takeda received a first round bye in the doubles bracket.
