Soccer Continues to Build a Legacy

TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Arizona women’s soccer moves to 5-4-3 on the season after a strong weekend of Pac-12 Conference road play.

Senior Jazmin Ponce leads the Wildcats in shots (49) and goals (seven), including three game-winning goals. Ranking No. 2 on the squad is junior transfer Alexandra Doller who has recorded 24 shots, 12 on goal, and four goals with one game-winning score. Sophomores Hannah Wong and Kaitlyn Lopez have each recorded three goals for Arizona. Freshman Jaden DeGracie leads the team in assists with five and Ponce is right behind her with four.

Junior goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman has recorded a total of 53 saves and held three teams scoreless, Florida Atlantic, UC Riverside and No. 24 Ohio State. Back-up goalkeeper Alison Gondosch participated in two matches, recording one save and one goalie assist.

The Wildcat defense has held their 12 opponents scoreless for a total of 857 minutes, including three shutouts against non-conference opponents Florida Atlantic, UC Riverside and No. 24 Ohio State. Four matches have been decided by a single goal (Florida Atlantic, No. 11 UCLA, No. 2 Stanford and California).

The Wildcats dropped their first Pac-12 road match, 2-1, at No. 2 Stanford Friday night. In the loss, junior Emily Lai scored her first goal of the season in the 77th minute of the match to send the game into overtime. Taylor Uhl scored the game-winning goal for Stanford with eight seconds remaining in the first 10-minute overtime period. The Cardinal outshot the Wildcats, 22-19, with Ponce pacing the squad with five.

On Sunday, the Cats lost a 2-1 decision to California with Ponce recording the solo goal for Arizona. Ifeoma Onomonu and Rachel Mercik recorded the two goals for the Golden Bears. Kaufman recorded a total of eight saves of the 23 shots she faced.

Up next, the Wildcats will travel to Oregon to face the Ducks on Fri., Oct. 11 at 3 p.m. and the Beavers on Sun., Oct. 13 at noon. The match vs. Oregon State will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
