TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Utah in a double overtime battle Friday afternoon at Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium in Tucson, Ariz.
Arizona (7-7-4) defense held Utah scoreless for 102 minutes through two overtime periods. The Wildcats outshot the Utes, 19-13, with senior Jazmin Ponce leading the team with eight, three on goal. Lexe Selman and Ana-Maria Montoya each recorded three shots apiece.
Freshman Taylor Slattery picked up the game-winning goal for Utah (9-3-6) in the first two minutes of the final overtime period. Ashton Hall led the team in shots with three to contribute to the 13 shot total for the Utes.
“Both teams battled for long stretches of the game,” head coach Tony Amato said. “Unfortunately, they took their chance when they had it in extra time and that was the difference in the game. I thought it would come down to execution in the final third period and that’s exactly what happened.”
In the net, goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman recorded six saves for the Wildcats while Utah goalkeeper Lindsey Luke recorded eight saves.
Up next, the Wildcats match up with Colorado on Sun., Nov. 3 at noon. The match will be played at Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium.
