TUCSON, Ariz. – Senior Mario Urquidi and sophomore Matt Dunn advanced into the doubles quarterfinals on Friday at the 2013 Larry Easley Memorial Classic, hosted by UNLV.
Dunn and Urquidi cruised to an 8-1 victory over Tendai Tapfuma and Vasil Surduk of Seminole State College to move on in the draw.
In singles play, Dunn defeated Northern Arizona’s Trevor Unger in three tough sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Dunn later fell to Willie Sublette of UNLV, 6-4, 7-5.
Urquidi lost his first singles match of the day to UNLV’s Tamas Batyi 6-4, 6-2, but rebounded in the consolation round to defeat Felix Schueller of Grand Canyon. He won the match 6-2, 6-2 to advance to Saturday’s consolation quarterfinals.
“Mario did a nice job turning things around quick after a tough loss this morning,” said head coach Tad Berkowitz. “As for Matt, he is playing well but just needs to trust his abilities a little more.”
Match action will continue on Saturday with the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of doubles and the semifinal round of singles.
