TUCSON, Ariz. – Members of the Arizona football team collected weekly honors after Saturday’s 33-28 win at California. With the win in Berkeley, Arizona advanced to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in Pac-12 play. The Cats are bowl eligible for the second-straight season and five of the last six seasons.
Senior Jake Smith was named College Football Performance Awards Honorable Mention Specialist of the Week. At Cal, he connected on 4-of-4 PATs while kicking a career-long field goal of 53 yards. He was also just short on a 55-yard attempt later in the game. Handling all of Arizona’s kickoff duties, Smith booted six times for 353 yards and an average of 58.8 yards.
Senior Terrence Miller was named College Football performance Awards Honorable Mention Specialist of the Week. He hauled in five receptions for 88 yards, including a career-long 60-yard catch. Miller’s best came at the start of the third quarter and led to an Arizona touchdown to give the Cats a 26-14 lead.
Linebacker Scooby Wright was named Athlon Sports Pac-12 Freshman of the Week. He turned in the best game of his career at California. Wright set career highs for total tackles (11) and tackles for loss (3.0), including a half-sack – the first of his career. Wright was a force throughout the game for the Wildcat defense, which had two takeaways, forced nine three-and-outs (or fewer plays before a turnover) and scored a safety. On the safety, Wright teamed with Jared Tevis to stuff Golden Bears’ running back Darren Ervin for a three-yard loss in the end zone to register Arizona’s first safety since 2010. In the fourth quarter, Wright teamed with defensive lineman Justin Washington to combine for Arizona’s only sack of the game.
The Wildcats will host UCLA for Homecoming on Nov. 9, with an 8 p.m. MT kickoff on ESPN, at Arizona Stadium. Joe Tessitore, Matt Millen and Maria Taylor will be on the network broadcast. The game will also air on Arizona IMG Sports Network, KCUB 1290 AM in Tucson and Fox Sports 910 AM in Phoenix.
