The Arizona gymnastics team is set to enter the season ranked No. 17 in the nation according to the 2013/14 national preseason coaches’ poll released today.

“It’s what I expected as far as where we finished last year,” Ryden said. “We have a team this year where things are going in right direction. We can definitely improve on that number, especially with the talent that we have on this year’s team. That’s our goal.”

The Wildcats are one of eight Pac-12 schools to place within the top 25, with UCLA currently ranked No. 4, Utah ranked No. 6, Stanford at No. 9, Oregon State at No. 12, Washington at No. 20, and Arizona State falling in at No. 25.

“That just goes to show how strong the Pac-12 is in gymnastics,” Ryden said. “For the most part, we are one of the only conferences that have a large number of schools ranked in the top 25. It also shows how tough our schedule will be. I’m proud to be part of this conference and its strong gymnastics tradition. It shows this is a strong sport in this conference.”

At the conclusion of last season, the Cats were ranked No. 17 in the nation, after a third place finish at the Columbus Regional Championships. Coming into the season having lost two of the program’s top talents, the team is hoping to increase their success in the upcoming season with a young team.

“Our goal all season is to keep moving up in a positive fashion,” Ryden said. “We finished off the year at a high point and had the 13th highest score in the country last year at the regional meet. It’s a whole new group of girls, and we feel very positive about where we can go.”

The Wildcats will begin the season on Saturday, Jan. 11 in Chicago, Ill. followed by a meet at Stanford against BYU, Stanford and SacramentoState on Sunday, Jan. 19. Their first home meet of the season will be on Jan. 25 against No. 3 Oklahoma.
