TUCSON, Ariz. Arizona junior breaststroker Kevin Cordes was named Pac-12 Swimmer of the Month for the second straight month, the league announced on Wednesday.

Cordes remains undefeated in individual events on the season after posting three collegiate victories at the highly competitive Texas Invite. The junior shattered his American record in the 100 breast in the event with a time of 50.70, as well as finishing with two other wins in the 200 breast and the 400 medley relay.

In international competition, Cordes helped seal the victory for Team USA in the Duel in the Pool against Europe, swimming a leg on the tie-breaking 200 mixed medley relay that broke the world record with a time of 1:37.17. He also was part of the winning 400 medley relay team. Individually, he earned first place in the 100 breast with a time of 56.88 which is third-best in the world in 2013, and came in at third overall in the 200 breast. Cordes now owns four American records, as he holds the top spot in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events.

Cordes has now earned Swimmer of the Month a league-record five times throughout his career at Arizona, giving UA its 10th Swimmer of the Month selection. It is also only the third time that a male swimmer has received two-consecutive honors, as Cordes accomplished the feat last year and Stanford’s David Nolan earned back-to-back Swimmer of the Month honors in the 2011-12 season.

The Wildcats return to action on Friday, Jan. 24 for a dual meet against Stanford. Arizona will also take on California the following day.
