TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona began Saturday in similar fashion to Friday’s finish with another in victory against UC Irvine. Their 4-0 win marks the second of the season, moving them to 2-2 after Saturday’s doubleheader, which included a 4-0 loss against New Mexico

Going up against Jonathan Poon of UC Irvine, freshmen Will Kneale was victorious in his Wildcat debut, giving Arizona the point off of a two set win, 7-6, 6-2.

Sophomore Naoki Takeda played Tyler Pham for the second time in two days and repeated his earlier dominance. In the rematch, Takeda won handidly 6-0, 6-2.

Junior Sumeet Shinde found himself in a rematch as well, competing against UC Irvine’s Caryl Hernandez, but avenged Friday’s loss with a 6-2, 6-2 win.

Senior Mario Urquidi put the final nail in UC Irvine’s coffin, toughing out a three-setter from Jonathan Hammel to win 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

Fellow seniors Kieren Thompson and Fredrik Ask did not finish their matches due to Urquidi’s clinch. Thompson took Rafael Dividian to a third set after going 6-3, 5-6, and Ask concluded after scoring 6-3, 6-7 in the first two sets.

In their evening match against No. 72 New Mexico, several Wildcats were able to push the Lobos to three sets, but none could finish out to earn points.

After falling behind in the first set to Samir Iftikhar 4-6, Ask rebounded in the second to win 6-4 before ultimately falling in the decisive set 3-6.

Thompson rebounded against Mitchell McDaniels to a third set after posting an 0-6, 6-4 start, and Kneale pushed to a third set following a 6-2, 4-6 performance in the first two.

Takeda lost to Hayden Sabatka 6-3, 6-3, Shinde lost to Rodolfo Jauregui 6-3, 7-5, and Urquidi lost to James Hignett 6-3, 6-3.
