TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona swimming and diving teams will close out the 2013-14 dual season with a meet against rival Arizona State on Saturday at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The meet will begin at 1 p.m.
For the second time this season, Arizona junior breaststroker Kevin Cordes and sophomore diver Rafael Quintero have swept the Pac-12 Men’s Swimmer and Diver of the Month awards as the duo won the awards for the month of January.
The Wildcats had plenty of success in their final home meet of the season last weekend against Texas – a two-day, dual competition. Arizona combined to earn 15 first-place finishes despite falling to the Longhorns.
Saturday’s meet against the Sun Devils will be the first for Rick DeMont as head coach of the Wildcats. DeMont had been the interim coach since October and is in his 25th season at Arizona.
The Wildcats own the top time in the country in six events this season. Mitchell Friedemann owns the top time in the 100 back (45.52), Cordes holds the top time in the 100 breast (50.70) and 200 breast (1:49.38), Giles Smith has the top time in the 100 fly (44.73), Margo Geer shares the top spot in the 50 free (21.78) and the men’s 400 medley relay (3:03.73) is the fastest in the country so far.
Last season, both the Arizona men and women were victorious in the dual with rival Arizona State. The men won 179-105 and the women won 203-92.
Following the meet against Arizona State on Saturday, the Wildcats will kick off the Pac-12 Swimming and Diving Championships. Women’s swimming and men’s diving will compete in the conference championships February 26-March 1, while men’s swimming takes place March 5-8. Both championships will be at Weyerhauser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
