TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona closed out its weekend in California on Sunday with a 4-3 victory over UC Santa Barbara, moving the Cats to 6-5 on the year.
“Another gritty win on the road for the guys,” head coach Tad Berkowitz said. “We didn’t necessarily play our best tennis but I am really liking how locked in we are with our effort across the board.”
Mario Urquidi and Matt Dunn kept their dual season doubles record perfect, as they defeated Andrew Riminton and Teague Hamilton 6-2, moving the duo to 5-0 this spring. Sumeet Shinde and Naoki Takeda clinched the doubles point shortly after as they won 6-4 over No. 79 Tobias Galskov and Miles Seemann.
Fredrik Ask and Kieren Thompson’s match was left unfinished at 4-5 vs. Ziad Sultan and Sasha Gryaznov.
In singles, Takeda garnered Arizona a 2-0 lead with his 6-2, 6-0 victory over Riminton.
Ask defeated Sultan 6-5, 6-0 and Sumeet Shinde clinched the match with his 6-5, 6-5 win over Gryaznov.
Coming off Friday’s gritty comeback, Mario Urquidi won his second set vs. Erik Johnsson 6-0 after dropping the first 4-6. Urquidi ultimately fell in the third however, dropping it 6-5.
Facing a tough matchup vs. No 79 Tobias Galskov, Thompson was able to force a third set, but lost in a tiebreaker 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.
Carlos Bermudez made his dual season debut for the Wildcats, but fell in straight sets to Hamilton 6-2, 6-3.
The Wildcats come back to Tucson next weekend as they host Idaho on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 12 p.m. and Nevada on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. The matches will be the first on campus matches of the year, marking Arizona’s return to the Robson Tennis Center.
