Spring Practice No. 13 in the Books
By: Arizona Athletics
Release: April 07, 2014

TUCSON, Ariz. Head coach Rich Rodriguez and the University of Arizona football program continued spring practice on Monday at Kindall Field/Sancet Stadium. The 2014 Cats worked out in full pads for two hours. Below is a transcript of Rodriguez’s comments following practice.

On the consistency of spring practices:

“There has been consistency in some areas. We’ve been consistently inconsistent in some areas. I think the quarterbacks, the last two practices, weren’t as good as they were earlier. That’s an issue that we will get corrected but they’re competing. We’re done with our installation; no more new plays to put in. I reminded them today that it’s okay for everyone to take cover and run because they all have the ability to run a little bit. I’d rather have that than an interception.”

On how many plays are usually ran in a practice:

“We probably run more than most people do in an hour and a half practice because of our tempo. I know in a five-minute period, most teams would try to get in seven or eight and when we’re going fast we’re getting 12 or 13.”

On the tempo in practice:

“It’s good in practice. I think our guys are used to that. That hasn’t been an issue at all. Then again, in the fall, we will have to be in even better shape. We did some conditioning but we didn’t do as much conditioning as they’ll do leading up to the fall games. We’re not nearly in shape right now but we don’t have a game for a long time.”

On what Saturday’s spring game will be like:

“It will be like the scrimmage we had last Friday with a few more plays. I think we had 50-something that scrimmage. We’ll probably go about 70-something plays. Then we’ll have some competitions. We’ll see if anyone can kick a 50-yard field goal and give them some money from the bookstore. We’ll see if someone can out throw the quarterback in a long throw contest. I’ll probably go in the stands and let someone call a play.”

On finding someone in the place Ka’Deem Carey:

“You’re not going to have one guy who’s as good as him because he was the best. Whoever is at that position, you have to get some production. But to expect the same production as Ka’Deem is not going to happen.”
